Tomorrow I head for home, so this will probably be my last post for a while. Its been a wonderful two weeks on the road!<br />

The water level at Lake Mead is tangible evidence of the effect of the 15-year drought on water resources in the southwest. The terraced benches in this photo show the shoreline elevations of Lake Mead at different times. At one time, all of this was underwater!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is a shot of the same area showing the current water level. The terraces from the previous photo are in the right background.<br />

This image shows the "bathtub ring" around Lake Mead that marks the high water level from 1983. The water is about 158 feet below that now.<br />

In this image, where the pavement ends is pretty much where the marina used to be during times of higher water levels. The marina has had to be moved about 1000 feet to keep up with the retreating shoreline.<br />

At Dante's View, more than 5500 feet above the valley floor, you can really see Death Valley as the ultimate expression of Basin and Range topography.<br />

The first stop was at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary just outside of Kanab. If you are ever there, I highly recommend taking a couple of hours for the tour.<br />

<br />
Next I drove across the Markagunt Plateau where I saw the lava flows that cap it.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSAfXpSuLWvvhEb9tC3S2RvcxskjLdoc-9QMinvjKblTWpnWvbv0hQikfxvXMRddh2DP4JcTqEG0EAJL0K6IJZ5_RtJ-k7AjROybSxGNlhyeC0UEiT_Y_aTP71KGlpT4NW-4wYDYACGWg/s1600/Checkerboard_01A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSAfXpSuLWvvhEb9tC3S2RvcxskjLdoc-9QMinvjKblTWpnWvbv0hQikfxvXMRddh2DP4JcTqEG0EAJL0K6IJZ5_RtJ-k7AjROybSxGNlhyeC0UEiT_Y_aTP71KGlpT4NW-4wYDYACGWg/s320/Checkerboard_01A.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As I was driving through the park, the amount of aeolian cross-bedding visible was astounding. Utah really should change its nickname from "Beehive State" to "Land of Cross-Beds".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After leaving the main section of the park, I headed up Kolob Terrace Road to Lava Point. The views along the drive were spectacular and there was practically no one around. From the top of the plateau you can look down towards the main section of Zion.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT0JYx2NU0KpfgxIG01AjYoTEtL0gAkj5m6w1O8318_UqTgQgyLGqixU_J72O5IpwJ4r2mc2Eg4Kf4zMXX_cIpQjnT3zLrXOP-0naZhwEVioxVm2tantRQ3Tv-8c6a7Xs-WQBunGpS7Tg/s1600/Lava_Point_01A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT0JYx2NU0KpfgxIG01AjYoTEtL0gAkj5m6w1O8318_UqTgQgyLGqixU_J72O5IpwJ4r2mc2Eg4Kf4zMXX_cIpQjnT3zLrXOP-0naZhwEVioxVm2tantRQ3Tv-8c6a7Xs-WQBunGpS7Tg/s320/Lava_Point_01A.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Today, there was a wildfire visible in the distance on the plateau above the main section of Zion.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
After leaving Lava Point, I went to the Kolob Canyon section of the park, about 45 minutes from the main section of the park. This area is just as scenic as the rest of the park, yet there are very few visitors, which is good for me since I hate crowds.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
As I was driving back to Kanab, I managed to get a photo of some "wildlife" - some bison on a ranch just east of Zion.<br />

At the south end of Monument Valley is Agathla Peak, a volcanic plug dating to about 25 million years ago.<br />

Traveling to Page, AZ I passed two of environmentalists worst nightmares, both about 5 miles from each other: the coal-fired Navajo Generating Station and Glen Canyon Dam.<br />

<br />
Glen Canyon Dam is an impressive structure, and although it's effect on the Colorado River has been abysmal, it does produce carbon-free electricity. Ironically, the Navajo Generating Station had to be built to supply the electricity for the Central Arizona Project because the the hydropower electricity had already been apportioned to other users.<br />
<br />
Next stop was Horseshoe Bend, a classic entrenched meander on the Colorado River just downstream from the dam.<br />

This is looking towards Courthouse Towers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwJ1gxxE4cX-mwejzUFa_ExZO720vdpTYk8EST9555Bdr5H9YFeXzYnmeRHhYP3RPcw4isIXeXkDTCwDVInFIcfTR79-wuZ-eaHRIVlGIsCBT7vmiCukX83XdShxTmS_RFTTh9trPp0c/s1600/Arches_01A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwJ1gxxE4cX-mwejzUFa_ExZO720vdpTYk8EST9555Bdr5H9YFeXzYnmeRHhYP3RPcw4isIXeXkDTCwDVInFIcfTR79-wuZ-eaHRIVlGIsCBT7vmiCukX83XdShxTmS_RFTTh9trPp0c/s320/Arches_01A.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After leaving Moab, I headed to Natural Bridges Nat'l Monument. When I arrived the rain was pouring down, but I figured "what the hell" and drove the loop road. When I got to the far end of the loop it cleared up enough to get some shots of Kachina Bridge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0fNWg8AjyTGBCOHhR_LOOdf6TtTDTNSjjB0e3Y71fFbqbercs0bO4VxuIyuWeL1hKlGT4KVtYfIss7kaYmMfSgjrlSLK3wHW9RI7DWODNYTErzZc4tu310_eXcR5Ra7ocYajkrKODgiU/s1600/KachinaBridge_01A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0fNWg8AjyTGBCOHhR_LOOdf6TtTDTNSjjB0e3Y71fFbqbercs0bO4VxuIyuWeL1hKlGT4KVtYfIss7kaYmMfSgjrlSLK3wHW9RI7DWODNYTErzZc4tu310_eXcR5Ra7ocYajkrKODgiU/s320/KachinaBridge_01A.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Also, if you like cross-bedding, you'll love Natural Bridges - the Cedar Mesa Sandstone is loaded with them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizPNTSnFJPbRz43Bh9UOWTFqfOGYF0w3bnZN9Jo9ZyQ_nrWXsdqBBcNpPCAyTPaV9l03Mxl7f9ty7MdlaiKW3bEzG54KqN_PQEEqJ3hTf4jURBtq-mCPbaqufoVfpKh2mp4XPVBNMgWdg/s1600/CedarMesa_Xbeds_01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizPNTSnFJPbRz43Bh9UOWTFqfOGYF0w3bnZN9Jo9ZyQ_nrWXsdqBBcNpPCAyTPaV9l03Mxl7f9ty7MdlaiKW3bEzG54KqN_PQEEqJ3hTf4jURBtq-mCPbaqufoVfpKh2mp4XPVBNMgWdg/s320/CedarMesa_Xbeds_01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
After driving through more torrential storms, I arrived at Muley Point at the southern tip of Cedar Mesa. After all that I had heard about this place, it did NOT disappoint! It's about 1000 feet above the Goosenecks of the San Juan River and the view is spectacular.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In this view you can see the buttes and mesas of Monument Valley in the distance.<br />

On the way back from Delicae Arch, I spotted a frog in the water of Salt Wash near the old Wolfe Ranch.<br />

After leaving Arches, I headed over to Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands just as one set of thunderstorms was passing and another set was getting ready to arrive.<br />

The weather east of the Continental Divide was cloudy and rainy, but it cleared by the time I reached Dillon.<br />

For the rest of the trip it was mostly clear with occasional showers. At Glenwood Canyon I got a shot of some rafters running the muddy Colorado River.<br />

Today, while crossing Kansas during ferocious thunderstorms, I came across two symbols of our energy sources - the oil pumpjack (the past) and wind turbines (the future).<br />

When we passed through Rock Mountain NP the wildlife was really on display. The first was a young moose in the Kawuneeche Valley not far from the west entrance.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3V-7r-o4kHJHzP0n1xUXHb4bpXrgkpW0ubuugyNH-xDwN-iXlaHnZ9XOX2n0p8EsPSdKSYO39Ej-TenzpLb5OtWd8v2TfLaGkM_97yKKYOjjs9TtFKToAngq6fDBHvmMx8_lOrHg-oDE/s1600/Moose01A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3V-7r-o4kHJHzP0n1xUXHb4bpXrgkpW0ubuugyNH-xDwN-iXlaHnZ9XOX2n0p8EsPSdKSYO39Ej-TenzpLb5OtWd8v2TfLaGkM_97yKKYOjjs9TtFKToAngq6fDBHvmMx8_lOrHg-oDE/s1600/Moose01A.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next were a couple of herds of elk near the Alpine Visitors Center. In the first herd just west of the visitors center was a female with what appears to be a tracking collar.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRhdUpPP4cG54eMBDESAr19WfVnYOvwxxu3gX62_NbQpd3hCHl8RMmIQpzTzyw8e4suZSlmpccNaAeaIMZ4c-Kjqe2Xwnp68VifYRTG0G11aWpupgKgjg3hbjm8ap3lgwD1jQvZBDFyY8/s1600/Elk03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRhdUpPP4cG54eMBDESAr19WfVnYOvwxxu3gX62_NbQpd3hCHl8RMmIQpzTzyw8e4suZSlmpccNaAeaIMZ4c-Kjqe2Xwnp68VifYRTG0G11aWpupgKgjg3hbjm8ap3lgwD1jQvZBDFyY8/s1600/Elk03.jpg" height="224" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The second herd had a couple of magnificent bucks.<br />

Finally we saw some bighorns scamper across the road and I was lucky enough to get a distance shot before they disappeared.<br />

Although the day was mostly overcast, I did manage to get a photo of a glacial valley with a horn and surrounding cirques.<br />

This will probably be my last post for a while as I will be getting ready for classes to start in 3 weeks.Rock Headhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05543769768515349524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3721773066187117447.post-44584499849721871402013-08-01T01:09:00.001-04:002013-08-01T01:09:19.334-04:00Success at Delicate ArchYesterday was a long day so I didn't post anything. We started out with a trip to the Needles section of Canyonlands NP. Here is a shot of Island in the Sky from Needles.<br />

After getting back to Moab, we took a little break to rest up for the climb to Delicate Arch. While waiting for the sunset a ground squirrel made an appearance for the gathered crowd, I don't know if he's learned this because people feed him, or what, but he was entertaining.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This was my fourth time up there since 2008 and I finally managed to get photos of Delicate Arch at a non-cloudy sunset!<br />

On Friday traveled from Colorado Springs to Crawford CO to visit a friend. Along the way we passed by Royal Gorge, but the bridge was closed because of the recent wildfires.<br />
<br />
Just west of Poncha Springs, we passed the southern end of the Sawatch Mountains.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
At Gunnison, we left Rt. 50 for CO 92 and began to climb up towards Fruitland Mesa. Along the way we got some glimpses of the Black Canyon.<br />
